Magic Box with Die made from walnut.  |  Magic Box makes Die... Ba-da-boom, Ba-da-bing: Disappear!
JUST WANTED TO SHOUT OUT TO MY DAD. We built this 18' airboat together back in 1973-74. I can't help but think this shared project helped mold my life for the next 50+ years. The boat was made from marine plywood with oak flooring. Rear deck made of mahogany. The hull with 3,200 brass screws was covered with 3-layers of fiberglass (my hands still burn). The interior was completely covered with indoor/outdoor carpeting. The powerplant was a 140 h.p. Corvair engine that we rebuilt together with modified oil pan, four single-barrel carburetors, custom made 'Cherry Bomb' headers and 5' wooden propeller. It had an electric starter, but it also came with a hand-crank (just like my Model A!)... but could also be started by throwing the prop (if you were brave enough!) The boat was flat-bottomed and so we often did 45 m.p.h. sideways! It weighed in at 1,800 pounds. It was a real 'head-turner' back in the day, and was a fantastic 'learning project' for a young teenager. I will always be grateful for the opportunity, trust and the learning experience.
